Sometimes it seems my quietest paintings say the most important things. This is one of them and I like it quiet a lot, in fact, I’ve never sold the original.”
“This is a study of balanced and opposites, light against dark: life against death. The checkerboard has always been a symbol for the playing field of life, and in this case, I have it fading into infinity rather than ending in a sharp line at the horizon. The hunchback, our every man, shows signs of vulnerability. The flower of life is embroidered on his sleeve, but the skull, a memento moire(death), is on his cap. One thing is for sure, he will only have a limited time as a player in this game. Yet, even this frail mortality will not prevent him from letting his light shine. And he sits in a sky full of stars, which might be others just like him, holding up their lights in the dark. We’re candles in the darkness for each other, so it’s important to let your light shine, no matter how small it is.

The artist was inspired by the classic fairy tale The Frog Prince, when the most beautiful princess in the land loses her gold ball down a well and promises a frog he can be her dearest companion if only he retrieves it, which he does. She reneges on her promise until her father, the king, seizing the opportunity of a teaching moment, makes her keep her promise. She ignores the frog, but after a few days, actually begins to like her new friend and kisses him. He turns into the prince he was before a witch cast a spell on him. The two live happily ever after. The artist has shown the young princess holding the golden ball and contemplating the cost of keeping it, against the cost of sharing her love with the world. In the end, she made the right decision.
